Lucy Sloan, BA Psych, RPC, ACCP, CAATP, CCAATP

Discussion Topic: Physical health - How mental  health, stress can affect physical health and what are physical signs you may not realize are stress related.

In order to understand how to manage our busy lives, we need to explore the ‘why’ of stress and how it can impact many different aspects of our health, including our mental, emotional, and even physical health.  In our discussion we will take a deeper look at recognizing what is happening in our bodies and how we can learn to work with stress and not against it.  This thought provoking talk may shift how you see stress.  You may even learn… it’s not as bad as you think or in fact, it may be as bad as you think. We will talk about when chronic stress negatively impacts us physically, how to notice this in our bodies, and ways to help manage more effectively. AND we can do this by changing our perspective of stress to help drive us rather than hinder us.

Bio: Lucy has spent over 23 years in the counselling field and almost 10 years as an entrepreneur.  She started an 11 year career as a Probation Officer in Winnipeg supervising and providing interventions to offenders in the community.  Lucy then went on to spend 4 years in the mental health field as a Community Mental Health Worker and Intensive Case Manager; working with a variety of adults with mental health disorders.  In addition to being a lifelong animal lover, following a major head injury, Lucy discovered the healing capabilities of animals and decided to integrate this with her counselling skills.  She founded Lil' Steps Wellness Farm in 2015 to assist youth and adults in increasing their positive mental wellbeing with the help of animals.  Lucy has been operating this business for over 8 years and has expanded the services offered and now has two locations in St. Malo and Winnipeg.  She currently provides the only training and certification in Manitoba through the Child-Centered Animal-Assisted Therapy Association to assist health care professionals in integrating animals into their scope of practices.  She is also a part of a team of professionals with the Institute of Child Psychology, where she provides mental health education to parents, caregivers, and  helpers in building capacity for them to help their child. Lucy also founded in 2022, Lil' Steps Wellness Foundation, a non-profit association that provides youth and adults from low-income families to access mental health services and helps to support the rescue of animals who provide this service.  Lucy is also a published children's book author and integrates the stories of her animals into learning for children and teens.  She has successfully developed and implemented a school program based on this children's story across Manitoba and Alberta.   Lucy is a mother to three human children and over 5o animal co-workers.
